A $240 million remake of Redwood City’s nonprofit community hospital was unanimously approved Monday night by the City Council of Redwood City.

The planned new addition to the current 57-year-old Sequoia Hospital at 170 Alameda de las Pulgas will include a four-story pavilion with a new cardiovascular center and medical and surgical services, a medical office building and a parking garage, according to hospital spokeswoman Joanie Cavanaugh.

The current facility, housing the emergency room and birth center, will remain and receive a seismic retrofit to comply with state law, Ms. Cavanaugh said.

She said the improvements will allow bigger private hospital rooms for patients; expanded treatment and consultation services; improved technology, including wireless communications and monitoring; and interior colors, gardens, and outdoor landscaping conducive to a “healing environment.”

“Our community will benefit from state-of-the-art medical care delivered in larger private rooms with clinically advanced equipment,” Sequoia Hospital President Glenna Vaskelis said.

Groundbreaking is expected to take place in November, and construction is scheduled for completion in 2012.

The current hospital will remain open during construction.
