The school board race for the Sequoia Union High School District has lost a candidate. In a joint statement, incumbent Sathvik Nori announced he will not seek reelection and endorsed his opponent Michael Dekshenieks.
While Nori’s name will still appear on the ballot, he asked community members to redirect their votes to support Dekshenieks in the Nov. 3 general election.
“After careful consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection to the Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees representing Area D,” said Nori in a written statement. “It has been an incredible honor to serve our students, families, educators and communities, and I am proud of the work we have done together.”
Nori was elected to the school board’s Area D seat in 2022 as a new graduate from Menlo-Atherton High School — making him the youngest person to be elected to the Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees. Area D encompasses neighborhoods in central Menlo Park, North Fair Oaks and Atherton.
“I have known Deks for the past seven years and have seen firsthand his deep commitment to students and families in our district,” said Nori in a press release, referring to Dekshenieks. “He is a thoughtful and dedicated advocate who understands the importance of ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.”
Dekshenieks, a management executive and former Naval officer, is a parent of two Menlo-Atherton graduates and volunteer lacrosse coach at M-A. He has previously advocated to maintain ninth grade honors courses in district schools.
“As a client-facing management executive and a former U.S. Navy Officer, I have built my career around leading teams and solving complex problems, and I am excited to bring that experience to serving our schools and community,” Dekshenieks said.
His campaign is focused on academic excellence, student opportunity and data-driven policies, according to his candidate statement. Dekshenieks’s priorities also include classroom curriculum, student safety, teacher retention and skillful budgeting of taxpayer dollars.
Dekshenieks expressed gratitude toward Nori for his endorsement, stating that he looks forward to “following in his footsteps.”
