San Mateo County supervisors voted 4-0 Tuesday to advance a permitting system for businesses using autonomous, AI-controlled robots in unincorporated areas.
The ordinance, introduced by Supervisor Ray Mueller, would require permits for certain robots that operate partly without human control and use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Businesses would have to disclose safety information and submit plans addressing potential worker displacement.
Employers would have to offer displaced workers reassignment at equal or greater pay, 60 days’ notice plus severance, or pay into a county workforce retraining fund.
The ordinance also includes fees to help fire agencies prepare for lithium-ion battery fires.
It is expected to return to the Board of Supervisors for final adoption and would take effect 30 days later if approved.
