During the 1850s, gold rush San Francisco was growing at a frantic rate. Down the Peninsula, things moved far slower, except in the Woodside neighborhood, where the redwoods provided lumber jacks with jobs, and the scandalous political history of San Mateo County took root.
Mitch Postel, president of the San Mateo County Historical Society, will talk about “1850s: Rough and Tumble Woodside,” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Woodside Independence Hall, 2955 Woodside Road.
Find out how Bear Gulch, Whiskey Hill and Tripp Roads got their names. Hear about some of Woodside’s colorful early characters.
