Happy last day of Dry January. Where did the month go? I’ve been working hard at reducing my sugar consumption along with alcohol. The alcohol was easy, the sugar – not so much. I feel like I just finished the left-over dregs of Christmas candy.
I had two not-so-sweet setbacks this month which surprised me.
First, there was the brown out, meaning I ate so much sugar all at once that my body revolted and forced me to into sleep. Just knocked me out. It’s happened before, some call it a “sugar coma.” What other food has that kind of power? The second setback was getting sick to my stomach after a post- dinner binge of craisins and peanuts. That’s a new one – humbling to say the least.
So we begin February with continued hope to regulate and return to “normal,” a state I’d describe as eating dinner with a dessert or glass of wine but then that’s it. No late-night eating, no munching on sweet treats long past dinner, no intense cravings to conquer.
It takes me time (usually 3 months) to recover from the end-of-year sugar feast. Maybe it does you too? Don’t give up. You need many options to transition your brain out of Candy Land.
Here’s an easy recipe to call on. Dates, peanut butter and flax bake up into a surprising outcome that offers sweet and protein together, a combination shown effective at quelling cravings. Peanut Butter Date Balls
Makes 25 cookies
1 cup medjool dates, pitted and chopped
1 cup peanut butter
1 T flax seeds, ground
3 T water
½ ts. baking soda
1 ts. apple cider vinegar
course sea salt (optional)
Preheat oven to 350F. Line baking sheet with silicon baking sheet or parchment.
In a food processor, add the dates and whirl to mix (it’s ok if a ball forms). Add peanut butter – vinegar. Combine but do not over mix. Form batter into balls, place on baking sheet, 1-inch a part. Sprinkle with sea salt. Bake 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
