When a grass fire broke out on Aug. 30 and closed I-280, a California Highway Patrol officer took over a Waymo to steer it off the freeway. The self-driving car had tried to drive on the shoulder, apparently to avoid traffic, before needing to reverse to get out of the way of cars that were using the shoulder to get back to the nearest exit.
