Does it sometimes appear that San Mateo County government is distant, obscure and inaccessible?
Supervisor Rich Gordon would like to correct that impression by going high-tech. He’s launched a Webcast on his county Web page called “Community Message” to promote dialogue with constituents.
“I want to inform the residents but also hear from them,” he said. “I’d like to know what people think about what we are working on here in the county.”
In his first Webcast for July and August, Supervisor Gordon outlined three current county issues and asked for responses. Under a new committee structure for the supervisors, Supervisor Gordon chairs a new Environmental Quality Committee, which is initially focusing on watersheds, global warming and recycling.
Mr. Gordon urged residents to support county agriculture by patronizing restaurants and food establishments that feature the farm bureau’s “As Fresh as it Gets” program. He also talked about the budget, and the long-term challenge to the county of paying for the prison system and health care for the indigent.
Mr. Gordon, who lives in Menlo Oaks and represents District 3, which includes Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley, and most of the Coastside, encouraged people to contact him about their interests and concerns.
“Not everyone has time to attend our board meetings,” he said. “I understand that, so hopefully people will find five minutes to get caught up on county affairs in the comfort of their own home or office.”
Supervisor Gordon’s Community Message can be found under the San Mateo County web page, www.co.sanmateo.ca.us; click on the “Board of Supervisors” link on the left, and then “Richard S. Gordon.” Or send messages to rgordon@co.sanmateo.ca.us.
