While Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 15, is mostly about cleaning trash in beautiful places, Save the Bay has a decorative variation.
Starting at 9 a.m. a flotilla of canoes will head out from Redwood City to Bair island, where the volunteer paddlers will clean up trash and non-native plants from the restoring marsh off the end of Whipple Avenue.
This is just one of many local activities that will clear cigarette stubs and paper, bottles and junk from our beaches, bays and waterways. More than 50,000 people are expected to head out in California alone to more than 700 sites around the state, according to organizers.
The Bair Island trip runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It costs $25 for Save the Bay members and $35 for others. To sign up, call 510-452-9261, or go to savethebay.org and click on Coastal Cleanup Day by Canoe at Bair Island.
