Substance abuse by teens on weekend nights need not result in their getting behind the wheel.

The “Safe Ride” program engages teen volunteers in a taxi-cab-like service for other teens who shouldn’t be driving and who have the presence of mind to call for a free and confidential ride home. Teens who just need a ride can also call.

The program, which includes service to Atherton, Menlo Park, Woodside and Portola Valley, operates between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays during the school year, with the last request accepted at 1:30 a.m.

Now in its 22nd year, the program is run by the Palo Alto chapter of the American Red Cross. In 2006-07, the program’s Web site lists 698 calls received, 537 rides given and 2,175 volunteer hours served.

Teen volunteers receive community-service credits. Volunteers need their parents’ permission and must apply using forms available at www.paarc.org. Click on the SafeRide link.
