The 4-H Youth Development program is one of the oldest nationwide organizations focusing on youth development, yet in San Mateo County it’s one of the least known, says May Meyer, a county 4-H representative.

A program of the UC Cooperative Extension Service, 4-H has more than 500 members in the county. Local clubs hope to double that with their current recruitment drives, she says.

Open to all youth ages 5-19, 4-H is recognized by its green clover and the four Hs that stand for head, heart, hands and health.

“4-H youth learn leadership, citizenship, and life skills,” Ms. Meyer says. “Many people know 4-H from the San Mateo County Fair. But, in addition to raising animals, members can go camping and learn how to cook, sew, build a Web site, and be a leader in the community.”

Nationally, 4-H Youth Development is a community of more than 6.5 million young people, she says. During October, clubs in the county are hosting events to bring attention to 4-H program and recruit new members.
