The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula will honor the winners of its 2007 Leading Citizens Awards at a gala on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto.
The honorees are James and Rebecca “Becky” Morgan and their family, Oracle Corp., and Stanford University.
Mr. Morgan is the chairman of the board of Applied Materials and chairman of the Morgan Family Foundation. He also on the board of the Nature Conservancy.
Ms. Morgan is a former California state senator and former president and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, which brings together people from business, government, education and the community to act on regional issues.
Through their foundation, the Morgan family has invested in the clubs’ academic program, called LEARN (Literary Engagement and Achievement Right Now).
Oracle and its foundation has contributed about $2 million to the clubs’ academic program. Safra Catz, Oracle’s president and chief financial officer, will accept the award.
Stanford students and staff from the athletic department, business school, education school, the Haas Center for Public Service, and the John W. Gardner Center for Youth have volunteered at the Boys & Girls Clubs.
Business students help with homework and athletes help with team activities. Students run SuperStars, a science class at all seven club sites. Staff and students from the School of Education assist in program planning and evaluation.
The 2007 Leading Volunteer Award will be presented to former Redwood City Mayor Daniela “Dani” Gasparini, a former club board member.
Some 3,200 children are involved in programs at the three clubhouses and four school-based locations, said development director Christiaan Canter. The programs focus on academics, science and technology, athletics and physical fitness, social education, and visual and performing arts.
