Menlo Park Library Garden Talk on perennial edible plants 

From blackberries and rhubarb to artichokes and collard greens, there are many easy, delicious plants you can grow in your garden. Lori Caldwell, owner of CompostGal: Consulting, Landscaping & Education, will discuss tips to increase yields and share the best — and easiest — plants to grow on the Peninsula. 

Register for this one-hour online webinar on June 5 at 6:30 p.m. at menlopark.gov. Garden Talk is a monthly online series hosted by the Menlo Park Library on the first Wednesday of each month. 

Take Two and Call Me in the Morning: Menlo Park Library exhibit on aspirin

The Menlo Park Library is hosting a special exhibit on the story of aspirin. Aspirin is a synthetic version of the active ingredient found in willow bark, which has been used for centuries by physicians and healers alike. The library’s display is an expanded version of the National Library of Medicine’s 1959 exhibit titled ​“Acetylsalicylic Acid: The Story of Aspirin.” The exhibit is open from May 28 through July 6.

Third annual PV Palooza

On June 1 from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Portola Valley will be hosting its third-annual PV Palooza music festival at Town Center, 765 Portola Road. 

The event will feature local food trucks, wine and beer as well as two stages where 16 local bands will be performing. Art vendors will also be selling a variety of handcrafted items. For all ages to enjoy the festival, side stages will feature kid bands and smaller acts. Activities for children will be available too. 

PV Palooza is organized by PV Palooza Foundation, a nonprofit funded through local business sponsors such as Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company, Woodside Priory, Sound Union and private donors.

Woodside local wins Rolex Grand Prix of Rome

Karl Cook, a 33-year-old equestrian who grew up in Woodside, won the Rolex Grand Prix of Rome on Sunday, May 26. Cook is the sixth American to win in the show jumping event’s 91-year history.

Cook and his 14-year-old mare, Caracole de la Roque, sped to victory with a time of 38.27 seconds. This is his second CSI (Concours de Saut International) 5 star win in Europe.

Burgess Park reopening set for June 1

The city of Menlo Park to celebrate the reopening of Burgess Park, 701 Laurel St., on Saturday, June 1, at 10 a.m., according to the city.

Burgess Park closed in late January for upgrades. Upgrades included a new accessible playground equipment, a rubberized surface around all play areas and an ADA parking stall.

Additionally, there is a new play area sign, benches, picnic tables and fences decorative laser-cut oak leaf designs, according to the city.
