Pool hours change after financial concerns
Amid financial troubles for Menlo Park’s pool operator, hours for Burgess Pool are permanently changing, according to Menlo Swim and Sport’s website.
The Burgess Pool will now close at 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and will open at 7 a.m. on Sundays. Previously, the pool opened every day at 6 a.m. and closed at 8 p.m. on weekdays.
Temporarily, Burgess Pool will be closed from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The midday closure will last until June 5, the last day of school for many local schools.
The changes are in response to lower turnout at the new Belle Haven pool causing financial troubles for Team Sheeper, the operator of the pools. As previously reported, the City Council was reluctant to limit hours at the Belle Haven pool, especially Councilmember Cecila Taylor, who represents the area around Belle Haven pool.
Menlo School partners with Rising Against Hunger
From May 21 to May 28, Menlo School in Atherton will be partnering with the nonprofit organization Rising Against Hunger to help tackle global food insecurity. Students will be volunteering to pack meals which will be sent to people affected by lack of access to food.
Since 2015, Menlo School has hosted nine meal packaging events, packing over 93,000 meals that have been distributed to the Philippines, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cambodia and more. This year, volunteers will be packing 10,000 meals consisting of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and vitamins.
