A renewed search this month for a 79-year-old Redwood City hiker with dementia who disappeared at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve more than seven months ago did not yield new information, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Margaret “Elaine” McKinley was last seen on May 1, 2025, hiking the Lost Trail when she became separated from family members. Early search efforts quickly escalated into a multi-county operation involving hundreds of search-and-rescue personnel, drones and K-9 units, the Sheriff’s Office said.

On Dec. 13, about 70 professional search-and-rescue volunteers conducted a coordinated, daylong search of the preserve and surrounding areas, marking the 12th organized search since McKinley went missing, the Sheriff’s Office said in a Dec. 17 Facebook post.

More than 1,000 search-and-rescue personnel from 25 agencies have participated in the search overall, using ground teams, horses, off-road vehicles, K-9 units, drones, aircraft and mapping technology. No confirmed sightings have been reported.

The Sheriff’s Office said it will continue periodic searches as part of a limited continuous search phase and urged anyone with information to call 911.
