Graduates of Corte Madera School and the Portola Valley School District will receive their diplomas on Friday, June 16, during a ceremony that starts at 5:30 p.m. in the school’s multi-purpose room.
In an unusual twist this year, a bagpiper who is a member of the Class of 2006 will lead the procession of students to the ceremony. He is Kyle Rothschild-Mancinelli.
Audrey Bullwinkel and Patrick Chase, student body co-presidents, will welcome the students, their families and guests.
Principal Joel Willen, in his second year at Corte Madera, will give the principal’s message.
Hanna Hunt, Adriana Kwicinski, Shea Marx, Kelly Miller and Olivia Stork, members of the school’s chorale ensemble “Panache,” will sing “I Hope You Dance” by Tia Sellers and Mark D. Sanders.
Students who have written speeches are being chosen to represent their class as graduation speakers.
A number of students will receive awards during the ceremony. The awards and their presenters are: service, David Macomber; scholar-athlete, Dan Flahavan; CARE (Character, Attitude, Responsibility, Effort), Jeff Mead; academic honors, Karen Reis; outstanding student, Brigid Corboy and Brigetta Brown; principal’s award, Mr. Willen.
The class will present its gift to the school: a classroom set of “wave boards” for street surfing, which combine the motions of surfboarding, snowboarding and skateboarding, and helmets for the physical education department.
Parents whose youngest child is a member of the graduating class, will be recognized.
Teresa Godfrey, president of the Portola Valley School District Board, and Trustee Donna Carrano, will assist Principal Willen in presenting diplomas.
Later the graduates will be whisked away to an undisclosed destination for the traditional Grad Night, planned by their parents on a surprise theme.
