The WEB program (stands for Where Everybody Belongs) is a great way to welcome sixth-graders to Hillview Middle School in Menlo Park.
The WEB student leaders, all eighth-graders, had up to nine hours of training about how to introduce the new students and to ensure that they weren’t nervous coming to a new school.
During Camp Hillview, 300 sixth-graders were split into groups of 10 to 12, each led by two or three WEB student leaders.
The leaders took their students to a classroom for various activities, including the name game, and bouncing around a balloon, keeping it in the air for as long as possible.
The students then had lunch, participated in a question-and-answer session, took a guided tour of the school, and met Principal Willy Haug.
In my experience as a WEB leader, the students had fun, learned a lot about Hillview, and seemed much less nervous than they were at the start of the day. They seemed excited to start their new school year.
