Two men were arrested and two stolen rifles and tools were recovered early Friday after San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies stopped a suspicious vehicle near Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Gretchen Spiker said deputies were proactively patrolling the area when they stopped a “suspicious vehicle” coming off northbound Interstate 280 onto Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park at about 2:15 a.m. Deputies found gloves, flashlights, face masks and other items often associated with burglaries.
The driver, identified as 25-year-old Jose Matute Vaquedano, was unlicensed and on probation for robbery, a press release said. Deputies also found that 27-year-old passenger Mauricio Peralta Marin was in possession of fireworks.
During the investigation, deputies located two rifles and several tools that had been stolen overnight from a home in Santa Cruz County. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed the property was linked to a residential burglary and collected the items to return to their owner.
Matute Vaquedano was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, felony receiving stolen property, felony conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of burglary tools, felony possession of a firearm while on probation, driving without a license and violating probation. He is being held without bail on the probation violation until at least his arraignment on Nov. 17.
Peralta Marin was booked on suspicion of felony receiving stolen property, felony conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of burglary tools and possession of dangerous fireworks without a permit. His bail was set at $40,000.
Spiker declined to provide additional information about the arrest.
