A Menlo Park police officer was injured during a pursuit across the Dumbarton Bridge on Wednesday afternoon, May 27.

Menlo Park officers spotted a speeding vehicle connected to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in unincorporated Redwood City after the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office issued a “be-on-the-lookout.” Officers pursued the vehicle eastbound over the Dumbarton Bridge but were not able to apprehend the suspect, according to a statement from police spokesperson Nicole Acker.

“One of our officers was involved in a collision with the center divider, west of the toll plaza. The impact caused the patrol vehicle to spin and make contact with an uninvolved vehicle,” she said in the statement. “The officer was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and is doing okay.”

The driver of the other car was uninjured and there was only minor damage to the vehicle, according to Acker.

A traffic alert was issued at 2:18 p.m. May 27 advising drivers to avoid traveling eastbound on the Dumbarton Bridge due to traffic congestion and to expect traffic backups and detours for the next hour while emergency crews were on the scene.

“We are thankful that no members of the public were injured, and we remain focused on keeping our community safe,” Acker said.
