Incoming Stanford student Jacob Yuryev has raised $24,446 to support his bid for Area B on the Sequoia High School District Board of Trustees whereas charter school principal Mary Beth Thompson has only raised $2,149 for her campaign.
Any candidate that raises more than $2,000 was required to file a statement disclosing their donations and expenditures from July 1 to Sept. 21 by Sept. 26. Thompson and Yuryev were the only two candidates to file that statement.
Both Thompson and Yuryev are running for Area B, which covers parts of San Carlos, Belmont and Redwood City. Daniel Tourian, who is also running for Area B, has yet to solicit donations on his campaign site and did not file a campaign fundraising statement, meaning his campaign is likely self-funded below the $2,000 threshold.
None of the three Area E candidates filed a form disclosing donations above $2,000.
Trustee Carrie Du Bois, who represents Area B and decided not to run for reelection, contributed $1,000 to Thompson’s campaign; Du Bois endorsed Thompson. Former Sequoia Trustee Chris Thomsen contributed $100. Former San Carlos City Council member Mark Olbert gave $250. Sarah Kinahan, a program manager for the San Mateo County Office of Education, contributed $100.

Of the seven contributors who donated more that $100 to Thompson’s campaign, all but one work in education.
Thompson spent $1,330 during the period.
Of the 63 contributors to Yuryev’s campaign, 24 live in either Menlo Park or Atherton.
State Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park, endorsed Yuryev and contributed $250 from his campaign funds.
Trustee Rich Ginn, who represents parts of Menlo Park and Atherton on the Sequoia board, also endorsed Yuryev and donated $500 toward his campaign. Ginn is running unopposed and does not appear to be fundraising.

Other notable donations came from former San Carlos Mayor Andrew Klein ($1,000), Art Collector Komal Shah ($500), Los Lomitas School Board Trustee Paige Winikoff ($250), Virginia Chang Kiraly, a Menlo Park Fire Protection District board member ($200), San Carlos City Council member Adam Rak ($250) and former Belmont City Council member Charles Stone ($500).
During the period, Yuryev spent $8,900. One expenditure includes a payment of $1,342 to LT Strategic Communications for its retainer, his campaign logo design and campaign literature and mailings. Laura Teutschel, the owner of LT Communications, donated $250 to his campaign.

I would love to see campaigns (especially for non-partisan positions like this one) be publicly funded. I think the way money buys access to so many things is the root of the divisiveness facing us these days. The disparity in fund raising behind a private school kid and public school teacher for a position directing our public school priorities should be a red flag for all of us.
He went to school in the district I think carlmont.
