Editor’s note: Ofelia Bello has since announced she has withdrawn from the East Palo Alto City Council race.
Ofelia Bello, born and raised in East Palo Alto, is a longtime renter’s rights activist and executive director of East Palo Alto nonprofit Youth United for Community Action. She joins the city council race rooted in civil engagement that spans multiple entities.
A Latina professional and first-generation college graduate with a master’s in urban affairs and public policy, she says she is dedicated “to volunteering with local organizations, advocating for affordable housing, fighting for renters’ rights [and] equitable community development,” according to her public candidate statement.
Bello did not respond to multiple requests for an interview.
Bello has dedicated six years to Youth United for Community Action as its executive director, where she strives to help young people organize and fight for housing justice, according to YUCA’s website.
She also spent years on the East Palo Alto Planning Commission, the East Palo Alto Sanitary District board, as chair of the Pahali Community Land Trust board of directors and as a board member on the California Community Land Trust Network.
In the interest of transparent and efficient leadership, she says she does not value “corporate or individual interests,” but instead wants to prioritize people of East Palo Alto, according to her candidate statement.
“Ofelia is driven by her roots in this community, her love for the people, and the powerful history that resides in her hometown,” the YUCA website states.
