A major earthquake on the San Andreas fault could isolate several communities, including Portola Valley, Woodside, Los Trancos Woods, Vista Verde and Ladera, and leave residents to fend for themselves for days.
A major fire could overwhelm the resources of the Woodside Fire Protection District, which serves these communities and which is equipped to handle just three incidents at a time.
Residents served by the fire district, including children 14 or older accompanied by a parent, are invited to a hands-on emergency preparedness class to be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 11, at the Portola Valley Town Center at 765 Portola Road.
In addition to basics in first aid and search-and-rescue, participants can join exercises on how to stay safe in a building, how to shut off utilities, how to assess damage and how to lift heavy objects.
The event is sponsored by the fire district’s Citizens Emergency Response and Preparedness Program and will include refreshments. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothes.
