Leading by example
The annual wrangling over the least glamorous of little-known council duties — attending various boards, committees, subcommittees, associations, roundtables and task forces for the year — usually takes place each January.Remember organizing games of tag when no one wanted to be “it,” and the last kid to yell “Not it!” got stuck being it? It’s a lot like that.
In Atherton, newly appointed Councilman Jerry Carlson ended up with the San Francisco Airport Roundtable, one of that City Council’s least-coveted assignments. Mayor Charles Marsala did take it easy on the new guy — despite vigorous lobbying, senior Councilman Alan Carlson couldn’t rid himself of his detested assignment to the Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance.
Woodside Mayor Deborah Gordon appears to have dodged complaints from Town Council members by taking on the lion’s share of assignments herself. Of the 23 assignments divided among seven council members, Ms. Gordon gave herself eight, while other council members got between two and four. That is, with the exception of Pete Sinclair, who wasn’t given a single assignment, in deference to a busy work schedule that prevents him from attending any meetings.
When one pool opens …
While Menlo Park is aiming to open its new Burgess Aquatics Center soon, another Menlo Park pool is closing — Menlo Park Pool in Perkasie Borough, Pennsylvania. The Perkasie Borough City Council voted recently to close the city’s Menlo Park Pool, according to the Allentown Morning Call, a newspaper based in Allentown, PA.
Council members were quoted saying the pool leaks about 5,000 gallons a week, and repairs could cost $50,000 to $100,000.
No word yet if there is a well-tanned Perkasie Borough swimming magnate named Tim Sheeper with plans to take over the pool and keep it open.
