Beggars can be winners
Tyler MacNiven, scion of Buck’s restauranteur Jamis, may already have won $1 million. Tyler and his teammate BJ finished in first place in the latest leg of the Amazing Race, a TV show that pits two-person teams against each other in a race around the world. The final battle between the three remaining teams for the $1 million prize will be revealed in the next two episodes.
So exactly what kind of travel skills does it take to make the top three? In recent episodes, BJ and Tyler have extorted money from teammates, panhandled in Australia, been left barefoot and half-naked when they lost their belongings, and gagged down enormous bowls of stir-fried grasshoppers.
The race, of course, is already over, but the participants are sworn to secrecy until the final episode airs.
The show airs at 8 p.m. Wednesday on CBS.
Pain at the pump, gain at the train
It almost seems that those folks at Samtrans and Caltrain enjoy it when gas prices skyrocket.A friendly reminder from the folks offering mass transit: the commute calculator, in which you can figure out exactly how much money you are throwing away traveling by car, as compared to bus or rail tickets, is available at Caltrain.com and Samtrans.com.
Everybody loves Robert
Although Menlo Park City Council members Lee Duboc, Mickie Winkler and Kelly Fergusson don’t always see eye-to-eye on city issues, they do have one thing in common — all of their husbands are named Robert.Ms. Duboc pointed out the coincidence during the council’s May 9 meeting.
Steve Schmidt and Richard Cline — who say they’re running for council in November — should get worried if anyone files whose husband is a Robert.
