An errant Mylar balloon tangled with a power line on Friday, June 9, causing a power outage affecting about 1,100 customers along Santa Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park, a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. spokesman said.
The outage occurred about 11:15 a.m. and lasted for about an hour, said spokesman Paul Moreno. The problem was traced to the intersection of Atkinson Lane and Santa Cruz Avenue, across the street from Hillview Middle School.
PG&E officials are using the outage as a reminder during graduation season that free-flying Mylar balloons, which contain metal, can cause big problems for power lines.
