U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Atherton, toured the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office’s multi-million-dollar forensics laboratory in San Mateo August 23 and were recognized by Sheriff Don Horsley for their efforts to secure $600,000 in federal money to expand the lab’s services.

The $12.4-million, solar-powered San Mateo Forensics Lab, which opened in 2003 and operates on a yearly budget of about $5 million, employs about 20 staff members who use state-of-the-art forensic equipment to help solve crimes in the county. In addition, the lab is used by state and federal agencies.

The $600,000 is scheduled to be in the federal budget in October, lab director Jim Granucci said.

Upon approval by the county Board of Supervisors, the money would be used to purchase new equipment for the lab’s biology unit and to add two employees: a forensics specialist and a firearms examiner, Mr. Granucci said.
