A proposal to tear down most of Stanford Hospital and replace it with a new building will be discussed in a study session by the Palo Alto City Council at 6 p.m. tonight.

A major expansion is also planned for the adjacent Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital that would nearly double its number of beds.

Plans for the two hospitals includes demolishing all but the 1989 wing of Stanford Hospital, which opened in 1959. The new hospital will have 456 beds, or a total of 600 including the 1989 nursing unit beds. The hospital now has around 500 beds but is licensed to have 613.

Packard Hospital is proposing to add 104 beds to its existing 143 beds. Both hospitals, especially Packard, often run close to full in-patient capacity.

The 1959 hospital would be torn down for seismic safety reasons. Many of the patient rooms in the planned hospital would be private rooms, compared to current rooms with beds for two patients.
