The United States Postal Service will hold a passport fair at the Menlo Park Post Main Office, 3875 Bohannon Drive, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 30.
People can apply for new passports or have old ones renewed at the fair, helped by postal workers.
The U.S. State Department has a backlog of passport applications because of pending rules governing travel to and from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Air travelers will need passports to re-enter the United States from those locations Sept. 30, while ground and sea travelers will need passports to return beginning Jan. 31, 2008.
The backlog means that processing passport applications now takes up to three months.
To be assisted in applying for or renewing a passport, people should have proof of American citizenship in the form of a birth certificate or previous passport plus a government-issued photo-identification, such as a driver’s license. A birth certificate alone is not enough.
Applications require two photographs, which can be taken at any post office for $15. Application fee for a first-time passport is $97 ($67 payable to the Department of State and $30 to the United States Postal Service). An expedited process is available for a total of $189.50 for those who need a passport sooner than 10-12 weeks.
