San Mateo County’s public hospital has earned top marks from a nationally recognized healthcare evaluation group, a San Mateo Medical Center spokesman announced Tuesday.

The San Mateo Medical Center was given full accreditation by the Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization that monitors and evaluates about 15,000 healthcare organizations nationwide, according to hospital spokesman Dave Hook.

In addition to recognition for high standards of quality and patient care, accreditation by the Joint Commission allows the hospital to receive reimbursement from the federal government for Medicare costs, Hook said.

Medical Center Interim CEO Dr. Sang-ick Chang said in a prepared statement that he was pleased with the commission’s seal of approval.

“It helps to know that we are on the right path and that we provide care that equals or surpasses that which you’d find at any other hospital in this country,” Chang said.

The Joint Commission conducts unannounced onsite reviews of hospitals and after a May audit, found that San Mateo Medical Center needed improvement in some of its “documentation and review procedures,” according to Hook.

After hospital officials submitted plans to address these areas, the Joint Commission gave the hospital full accreditation for complying with all its healthcare standards, Hook said.

San Mateo Medical Center runs an acute care hospital in San Mateo, a long-term care skilled nursing facility in Burlingame and 11 clinics throughout San Mateo County.
