Thousands are expected to turn out today for a multicultural celebration aimed at improving ties between police and youth in the North Fair Oaks neighborhood.
The Sixth Annual San Mateo County Sheriff’s North Fair Oaks Community Festival could draw 35,000 people to the unincorporated area, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The festival takes place on Middlefield Road between First and Fifth avenues and begins at 11 a.m. with a grand parade. Afterward, events for children include a climbing wall, clowns, face painting, art contests, storytelling and the San Jose Sharks Mobile Shark Tank.
Festival booths will offer foods from around the world and community information.
The event culminates with the coronation of the North Fair Oaks Queen of the Festival, and concludes at 6 p.m.
The celebration benefits Sheriff’s Office youth activities, including its annual S.T.A.R. Camp for underprivileged youth in San Mateo County; after-school athletic, creative arts and scholastic activities for elementary school students; the Sheriff’s Explorer Program for teens; and the Sheriff’s Diversion/Intervention Program offering guidance for parents and first-time youth offenders.
