The California Highway Patrol has won a $2.3 million federal grant to help inform parents of the dangers of not properly restraining their children in safety seats.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer in California of children ages 14 and under, the CHP says.
Along with 200 safety presentations and 25 checkup events, the Statewide Highway Enforcement Grant will provide for safety seats to be distributed to parents whose seats don’t measure up to current safety standards, according to CHP.
Money from the grant will also be used to increase the number of technicians certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to perform child safety seat inspections at CHP Child Safety Seat Fitting Stations, CHP said.
The public can contact local CHP offices to find a technician or fitting station.
“And remember to set a good example for your little one by buckling up yourself,” said Mike Brown, CHP commissioner.
The public can report unrestrained children in motor vehicles to CHP by calling 1-800-TELL CHP.
