Caltrain, BART, high-speed rail, freight trains, and how they should coexist for the next 50 years, will be the focus of a regional rail plan meeting scheduled for Monday, Aug. 27, in San Carlos.

The meeting, scheduled for 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the second floor of the San Mateo County Transit District office at 1250 San Carlos Ave., is the last of five workshops where transportation officials are seeking public input on a new blueprint for the Bay Area’s network of rail lines.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is leading the project, working with other transit groups to improve the existing rail system, determine locations for new train stations, and decide where passenger and freight trains can share tracks.

The plan will likely be adopted in September, and then MTC will take on the issue of high-speed rail — if, and where, it should run through the Bay Area.
