Under a blazing sun on Sept. 1 at Newark Junior High in Alameda County, the Menlo-Atherton Vikings opened Pop Warner conference play against the Tri-Cities Titans.

Here are the details of the Sept. 1 action:

Mitey Mites. Nick Becker’s crucial interception and some timely tackling contributed to a hard-fought 18-12 victory for Menlo-Atherton after Lavelle Gates (2) and Michael Fekete ran for Vikings touchdowns. M-A’s productive ground attack was sparked by key blocking from John Guiragossian, Drew Wyman, Reed Schaaf and Stavro Papadakis.

Junior Pee Wees. Thanks to three courageous defensive stands, M-A preserved a 0-0 tie with the powerful Titans. The Vikings made one last critical stop with 15 seconds left in the game. Linebackers Isiah Nash, David Teu and Zhi’ir James sparked the tenacious Vikings defense, and Adam Greenlow’s play at cornerback earned coaching citations. Nash’s 30-yard bolt on the first scrimmage play was the best M-A offensive move, but a fumble stopped the momentum.

Pee Wees. Off to a rough start in what had been regarded as a promising season, the locals were shocked by a 70-yard touchdown pass on the first play, and M-A took a 25-12 pasting from the home team. Scatback Ryan Blocker’s touchdown scamper was a highlight for the Vikings, who will be working this week to right the ship.

Junior Midgets. Keenan Gates broke off a 50-yard touchdown run for M-A, but the Titans expanded a 12-6 halftime lead to a 20-6 victory. Vikings defender Drew Uphoff grabbed a timely interception, and Alex Lopez, Sean Barrett and Jake Britschgi contributed sharp tackling. The coaching staff commended tackle Joseph Williams for hard-nosed defense.

Midgets.Menlo-Atherton had two touchdowns called back on penalties en route to a 12-0 defeat in the day’s final game, a twilight 7 p.m. contest. Both sides produced vicious hitting, and Vikings coaches cited Joe Vea, Josiah Paye, David Mapa, Spencer Vuja and Joshua Lasue for effective tackling.
