Workers started demolition on the front of the fire-gutted Walgreens building on University Avenue this morning.

Demolition crews began the careful work of tearing down the building Aug. 30. The 100-year-old building was badly damaged in a July 1-2 fire.

The demolition is expected to take another week.

The fire, which burned all night, was fought by 50 firefighters from Palo Alto and neighboring departments. It burned a hole through the roof, structurally weakening the building at Bryant Street and University Avenue.

Investigators determined a week later that the fire was intentionally set and evidence was turned over to the federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agency which sent it to its national laboratory for processing.

But Palo Alto police have yet to hear back from ATF, Sgt. Sandra Brown said.
