In the second shocking result of this young girls’ water polo season, Menlo-Atherton used a big third quarter to upend three-time defending Central Coast Section Division II champion Menlo School, 5-4, in a PAL Bay Division opener Wednesday in the Bears’ pool.

It was only last Friday that Castilleja knocked off the Knights, 7-5, to open the season.

Menlo (0-1, 1-2) led by 2-1 at the half, then watched as Menlo-Atherton (1-0, 1-0) scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter from sophomore Anna Geiduschek, junior Morgan Leech and senior Anna Faris as the Bears took a 4-2 lead.

With the match tied at 4, senior Jessica Feldman scored the game-winning goal for M-A with 2:49 remaining.

Senior Cayley Bowles scored two goals for Menlo.

In another PAL Bay Division opener, Castilleja (1-0, 5-0) got four goals from junior Kat Booher and three each from junior Ericka von Kaeppler and sophomore Katie Eulau in a 16-2 romp over visiting San Mateo.

Castilleja freshman Natasha von Kaeppler added two goals, as did Sayeh Bozorghadad. Freshman goalie Evan Cranston had nine saves, giving her 37 in five wins this season.

Alex Avery, James Balassone and Mark Hudnall each tallied a pair of goals in helping Menlo School (1-0, 4-2) to an 8-4 triumph over host Menlo-Atherton (0-1, 4-2) in a PAL Bay Division opener on Wednesday.

Two-time defending CCS Division II champ Menlo led 5-1 at halftime, but went cold in the second half and saw its lead cut to 6-4 early in the fourth quarter. Goals by Balassone and Hudnall in the final 3:41 iced the match for the Knights.

Senior Matt Bogott had two goals for M-A. Menlo’s stingy defense held M-A to 25 percent (4 of 16) shooting from the field.
