By Jim Gallagher, Vikings Boosters
Home cooking seemed to agree with the Menlo-Atherton Vikings on Sept. 22 and 23, as they enjoyed success against the Cambrian Valley Longhorns in their first 2007 Peninsula Conference Pop Warner games at Menlo-Atherton High School. Here are the details of the September 22-23 contests:
Tiny Mites: Although no score is posted in this Pop Warner beginners’ category, the young Vikings enjoyed touchdowns from Floyd Gazaway III and Keyshawn Ashford while shutting out their Cambrian Valley opponents. Defensive end Danta Cacchione headlined the M-A stoppers, and Tyler Foster’s blocking helped establish a solid running game.
Mitey Mites: Michael Fekete’s three-yard run with a recovered fumble and Lavelle Gates’ 38-yard sprint were the only scores as the Vikings whitewashed the Longhorns 12-0. Stavro Papadakis played his usual physical game in the trenches, together with Jose Varela and De’Maurier Jackson on defense.
Junior Pee Wees: Touchdowns by David Teu, Zh’ir James and Adam Greenlow sparked the Vikings to a 20-7 triumph over Cambrian Valley, while conversion runs by James and Cameron Kirkpatrick capped the scoring. Austin Wilson and Payton Upoff clutched some key passes for M-A, and Maxwell Gardiner headed a solid defensive effort. Blocking plaudits went to Tony Gabb, Robert Wang, Illya Mednick, Matt Odell and Charlie Roth.
Pee Wees: Surging back from a 7-0 first quarter deficit, the Vikings overwhelmed Cambrian Valley 20-7 with a powerful running attack and aggressive defense. Khalil (Lil) James, Talaisi Teu and Ryan Blocker broke off slashing runs that kept the visitors on their heels, while quarterback Landon Baty’s quick bursts up the middle unsettled the visitors. Baty’s two touchdown runs and a Teu conversion kick gave M-A a 14-7 lead, and James settled the issue with a 58-yard scoring scamper. Jack Heneghan, Joseph Mahoni, Campbell Roellig and Dominic Andrighetto keyed the winning defense, while Alex Andrighetto’s fumble recovery preserved the final Viking drive.
Junior Midgets: It was a forgettable day for the Vikings squad, which dropped a 26-0 verdict to the visiting Longhorns. The Menlo-Atherton coaching staff, which promised a vigorous week of practice in preparation for the West Bay Rams next weekend, was unable to identify a single Viking for commendation.
Midgets: Trailing 14-12, the Vikings turned on their offensive afterburners and roared to a 32-14 triumph over the Longhorns. Kash Flaherty and David Mapa caught scoring passes from Josiah Paye, who himself turned two bootlegs into scores. Edward Norton took a conversion pass from Paye, who also ran for an extra point. Josh Lauese, Zach Klein and Leo Tovo were defensive standouts.
