Saturday’s Big Game between Stanford and Cal at Stanford Stadium will mean heavy traffic jams before and after the game, which starts at 4 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol, Stanford deputies and Palo Alto police will coordinate traffic flows to and from the stadium.
The CHP will direct traffic from the Highway 101 to Oregon Expressway in an attempt to keep traffic congestion out of downtown Palo Alto.
Police are advising people to use I-280, Caltrain or other public transit to get to and from Palo Alto on Saturday.
A special, limited-stop train will leave San Francisco at 1:50 p.m., arriving in Palo Alto at 2:30 p.m. The stadium train stop near Embarcadero Road will be used.
“Despite our best efforts, there will be delays,” CHP Sgt. Paul McCarthy said.
This will be the first Big Game at the remodeled and rebuilt Stanford Stadium, which now seats 50,000.
