December brings a wide variety of performing and visual arts activities to the Menlo School campus, all of which are free and open to the public. The school is at 50 Valparaiso Ave. in Atherton.
A range of classical and traditional tunes will be performed by the Menlo Upper School Chamber Orchestra and Clarion Brass Ensemble on Friday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Stent Hall. A Jazz Band concert follows at 8:45 p.m. in Martin Hall, accompanied by the annual photo exhibit and sale in the Student Center.
The Chamber Orchestra and Clarion Brass Ensemble are led by Vicky Greenbaum, and the Jazz Bands are under the direction of Mark Warren. Both concerts will feature music with a holiday theme including the Alleluia from Bach’s Cantata #21 and excerpts from Swan Lake and the Waltz of the Flowers by Tschaikovsky.
A highlight of the orchestra concert will be the premiere of a new arrangement of Carol of the Bells for Percussion Ensemble by Menlo student Clarissa Coultas.
An exhibit of some 200 black-and-white images by Menlo School photographers will be held in the Student Center in the lower level of Stent Hall from 6 to 9 pm. Matted photographs will be available for purchase.
On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Menlo School Chorus, under the direction of Linda Jordan, will perform concerts at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Stent Hall’s Spieker Ballroom. Eighty singers from five choral groups will perform songs of Christmas and Hanukkah, and popular songs of the holiday season.
A highlight will be “An Irish Christmas,” a commissioned work for Menlo by Richard Evans that ties into the Chorus trip to Ireland in the spring. There will be songs for the audience to sing along with, including the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.
