Tom Steinbach has been named the new director of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s Environment Program.

Mr. Steinbach, who joined the foundation as a program officer a year ago, is the former executive director of Greenbelt Alliance in San Francisco. His appointment is the culmination of a national search to succeed former Environment Program director Hal Harvey.

Mr. Steinbach will direct the foundation’s western conservation grant-making portfolio, aimed at protecting land and water resources.

He is a graduate of the University of Rochester and has a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Susan Bell

Hewlett Foundation vice president Susan Bell has been named a senior fellow for energy and climate by the foundation. She will direct environment grants in the United States, China, Mexico and Brazil to advance energy efficiency and address global warming. She will continue to serve as vice president.

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is located at 2121 Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park.
