The top three girls’ water polo teams in the Central Coast Section will provide a preview, perhaps, of the CCS playoffs when the 14th annual Amanda MacDonald Invitational gets under way this weekend in Atherton.
Top-ranked Menlo-Atherton (14-3), which visits Aragon in a PAL Bay Division match Wednesday, tops the field as one of two section champs from 2007. The other defending CCS champ is Sacred Heart Prep (12-4), which can wrap up the West Catholic Athletic League regular-season title by beating visiting St. Francis on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Lancers currently are ranked No. 3 in the CCS poll and will head its bracket this weekend. Davis is the other No. 1 seed in its division.
Also competing will be Menlo School, Gunn and Palo Alto in the 12-team tournament.
The top seeds should advance without trouble into Saturday’s third round at Menlo College and Woodside High. Sacred Heart Prep and St. Francis likely will face off at Menlo at noon while Menlo-Atherton and Davis could meet at the same time in the other semifinal at Woodside.
The championship match is set for Menlo at 3:30 p.m. Sacred Heart Prep is the defending champion, beating Menlo-Atherton handily last season, 11-2.
