A 20-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning after he attempted to evade police and skidded across four lanes of Interstate Highway 280 in San Mateo, but his passenger remains missing, a San Mateo County sheriff’s lieutenant reported.

Sheriff’s deputy Tim Giltz responded to a report of an occupied suspicious vehicle at Sawyer Camp Trail shortly before 10 a.m. and exited his patrol car to approach the vehicle, but the driver rapidly accelerated away, according to Lt. Ray Lunny.

Giltz returned to his patrol car and followed the vehicle as the driver, Ryan Salonga, attempted to avoid the deputy, Lunny said.

Salonga allegedly ran a stop sign, drove 60 mph through a 25 mph zone and more than 95 mph on Highway 280 before he lost control, skidded across four lanes of the highway and crashed into the center divide, according to Lunny.

Salonga and the passenger then fled on foot across the northbound lanes of Highway 280 and up the hill toward the County Youth Services Center, Lunny said.

Salonga was arrested at the top of the hill without further incident and booked into jail, according to Lunny.

He was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, evading a peace officer, driving on a suspended license and possession of burglary tools after the tools were found on him and in his vehicle, Lunny said.

Three cell phones were also recovered from the vehicle, according to Lunny.

The passenger was not found and remained outstanding Tuesday, Lunny said.

Anyone who may have witnessed any of the events or who may have information concerning the suspects are encouraged to call Detective John Corkery at (650) 821-6205 or call the anonymous tip line at (800) 547-2700.
