Portola Valley’s Emergency Preparedness Committee is inviting residents to learn how to respond to an emergency such as an earthquake, wildfire or terrorist attack.

A series of six free Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) classes on Tuesday evenings begins Jan. 13, with a final class on Saturday, Feb. 28, for hands-on training and exercises. Pre-registration is required.

Evening classes are from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and take place at Woodside Fire Protection District station 19 at 4091 Jefferson Ave. in the Woodside Glens neighborhood. The Feb. 28 class happens at the main fire station at 3111 Woodside Road.

Among the topics: emergency medical operations, search-and-rescue, disaster psychology, and dealing with terrorism on a neighborhood level.
