First trains, and now buses. SamTrans announced that fares will increase starting Sunday, Feb. 1, close on the heels of Caltrain’s fare increases that took effect New Year’s Day.
Adult bus fares for local trips will be $1.75, up from $1.50, according to SamTrans spokeswoman Christine Dunn. The cost of adult monthly passes and tokens is increasing, as well.
The discount and youth fares will not change, but paratransit fares will increase by 50 cents, and the Lifeline fare will increase by 25 cents.
The express cash one-way fare will increase by 50 cents to $4.50.
Passenger fares cover approximately 18 percent of the cost to operate the bus, and the last fare increase was back in September 2005, according to Ms. Dunn.
