A small number of apartment residents were evacuated and taken to the Menlo Park Civic Center on Thursday, Feb. 5, after a 62-year-old man allegedly waved a gun in the direction of a garbage collector, then entered an apartment building on the 400 block of Waverley Street.
Menlo Park police arrested Kenneth Gfroerer about two hours later, at around 1 p.m., after he turned himself in, said Nicole Acker, spokeswoman for the Menlo Park Police Department. He was booked on charges of brandishing a weapon, Ms. Acker said.
Employees of Allied Waste of San Mateo County claim to have had encounters with Mr. Gfroerer in the past, police said. In this incident, the employee told police that he “quickly retreated” when he saw the gun, around 11 a.m., and called 911.
Police were not immediately successful in making contact with Mr. Gfroerer, and so evacuated a “small” number of residents to city council chambers, Ms. Acker said.
