In a major anti-gang raid capping an 18-month investigation, FBI agents assisted by East Palo Alto police executed search warrants at 7 a.m. Saturday to arrest members of the East Palo Alto-based Taliban street gang.
FBI Special Agent Joe Schadler said that the FBI simultaneously made the raids at 30 locations in East Palo Alto, Menlo Park and other Bay Area cities, including San Jose, Oakland and Gilroy. All the warrants were to arrest members of the Taliban street gang, Schadler said.
The Taliban name is believed to be adopted from a hip-hop record label rather than the international religious/political organization. Gang members use the name because it scares people, East Palo Alto police have said in the past.
More details about the arrests were scheduled to be released at a 10 a.m. press conference.
“This was the result of an 18-month investigation,” East Palo Alto Police Capt. Carl Estelle said.
At one location on Camellia Drive in East Palo Alto, three trucks of FBI agents in full body armor and with assault weapons left after securing a house. Later, a small child was carried out of the house by an FBI agent, covered with a blanket.
Animal control officers also removed a pit bull dog, held on long restraints on its neck.
The Taliban gang, which has African-American members, is believed to have been an offshoot of another gang, the Midtown Hogs, according to Schadler and East Palo Alto police. The gang is known for selling drugs and for violence.

It’s crazy that the FBI took all this time and effort to put in capturing a so called African American Gang, But allowed the Mexicans to kill the police and other young African American men. My question is why the have not solved any unsolved murders?????? The police and FBI need to focus more on the murder rate and not drugs.
We all deserve to live in peace without terrorism. I am glad that we are targeting the real terror in our own backyards. Great Job to our EPA police chief for sending the message that we will not tolerate this behavior!
This isnt a racial issue. they were responsible for many unsolved murders so why cant we just congradulate them.. and maybe they are looking into the mexican issue?? its crazy that you are really speaking bad about this and not good.. what did you know some of them or something? Good jo FBI and local police!
