Portola Valley residents are invited to dispose of items they have no use for at a free neighborhood cleanup day at Ford (baseball) Field from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the corner of Alpine Road and Westridge Drive in Portola Valley.

Residents (who must bring a garbage bill to prove residency) can bring old furniture, electronic equipment, appliances, plastic toys and scrap metal. Among items not accepted are hazardous wastes, such as oil, paint and pesticides; refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners that contain CFC refrigerants; and tires and batteries.

Residents can also dispose of unused prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs. A deputy from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand from 8 to 10 a.m. to accept the medications.

Throwing medications down the toilet may cause trace amounts to get into the water supply since sewage treatment plants aren’t equipped to remove them.
