Menlo School senior Jamin Ball saw his surprising run in the NorCal Boys 18 Junior Sectional tennis tournament end in the championship match at Santa Clara University on Saturday.
The sixth-seeded Ball had won his previous three matches after losing the first set in each one. He also gave third-seeded Shaun Chaudhuri, the North Coast Section individual winner this spring, his most competitive match, losing, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
Chaudhuri, a junior at Monte Vista High in Danville, won his first five matches in straight sets, dropping a total of 15 games along the way, and no more than three in any set.
Menlo grad Daniel Hoffman took home the consolation trophy with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mountain View’s Toki Sherbakov on Saturday.
Ball was also denied in the doubles final as he and partner Eugene Muchynski lost to Hoffman and Spencer Talmadge, 6-3, 6-3.
Menlo-Atherton grad George Horowitz and Menlo grad Max Glenn were forced to withdraw from the third-place match because of illness.
Menlo Park’s Aiden Mitchell and Mark Westerfield, and Palo Alto’s Emma Marti earned Sportsmanship Awards at the tournament.
In other local tournaments:
Gunn sophomore Joe Atlas advanced to the semifinals of the boys 16 Canada College Junior Challenger, but lost to the eventual champion, Crystal Springs Uplands freshman Graham Keyston, 6-3, 6-2, on Saturday.
Portola Valley’s Will Strober beat Cupertino’s Michael Huh, the tournament’s top seed, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the championship match, where he lost to Keyston, 6-2, 6-1.
Atlas came back to beat Huh, 6-4, 6-3, in the third-place match.
Top seeded William Savage of Portola Valley won the boys’ 14 championship Saturday with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Cupertino’s Kelvin Wang.
Palo Alto’s Isaac Wang lost to the eventual runnerup in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-4, while Menlo Park’s Carter Kremer beat Isaac Wang,6-1, 6-3, for third place.
In boys’ 12, top seed Reuben Sawal of Portola Valley won the championship with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Belmont’s Nathan Lu. He beat East Palo Alto’s Enrique Verduzco, 6-2, 6-0, in one of Saturday’s semifinals.
Verduzco rallied to capture the thirds-place trophy with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Woodside’s Alexander Buckley.
Los Altos Hills’ Philip Chang beat Woodside’s Luke Williford, 6-3, 6-0, for the consolation title.
