The second big showdown of the season is all set in the PAL Bay Division boys’ water polo race and this one can mean more than the first, if host Menlo can defeat Menlo-Atherton on Wednesday in a battle between the league’s two best teams.

The Knights (6-0, 11-4) will take on the Bears (6-1, 12-4) at 4 p.m. At stake for Menlo will be the division championship while the Bears need a victory to gain a tie for the PAL lead and forge a co-title.

No one else is even close to these teams in the PAL, as Monday’s results once again proved out. Menlo traveled to Woodside to post an 11-5 victory while the Bears swamped host Burlingame, 23-8 as senior Jed Springer scored a season-high nine goals.

In all, 10 Bears found the cage, including Paolo McCarty three times. Senior Jordan Bernstein was the assist leader with three and goalie Alex Gow turned back 12 Panther shots.

Menlo-Atherton lost to Menlo in their first PAL match, 10-6, but the Bears did beat the Knights in the CCS-NCS Challenge after that. M-A hasn’t beaten Menlo twice in league play since 2002.

Menlo comes into Wednesday’s match after another solid effort while topping Woodside. Junior John Holland-McCowan poured in five goals while displaying his offensive consistency. Luke Carrino and Jack Finch each added a pair while three goalies all saw action while combining for 10 saves.

In the girls’ PAL race, Menlo-Atherton (8-0, 15-1) remained atop the standings by one game following a 12-2 dunking of host Burlingame on Monday. Sarah Winters poured in four goals to pace the Bears while Vanessa Lane, Becca Dorst and MJ O’Neill each contributed two each.

Menlo-Atherton will visit Menlo on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Knights (3-4, 5-9) got a career-high nine goals from Hailey Smith on Monday in a 16-8 thumping of host Woodside. Rebecca Lawson added three goals for the Knights, who kept Woodside winless in eight league matches. Layla Allman was solid in the cage with 11 saves.

Castilleja, meanwhile, remained a game back of first-place Menlo-Atherton as senior Katie Eulau scored five goals in a 14-6 victory over visiting Aragon on Monday. Barbara Peterson added four and Natasha von Kaeppler had three as the Gators improved to 7-1 in league (9-5 overall).

Girls volleyball

Gunn is still looking for its first victory in the SCVAL De Anza Division after falling to visiting Los Gatos on Monday, 25-20, 25-15, 14-25, 25-17. The Titans (0-6, 12-15) got 11 kills and seven digs from Teresa Skelly plus 14 assists and seven digs from fellow senior Shelly Kousnetz. Julia Maggioncalda contributed seven kills and five digs, Audrey Waschura had 11 digs and Monica Cai added seven digs and six assists for Gunn.

Girls golf

Sacred Heart Prep (5-2, 6-2) bounced back from last week’s tough loss to first-place Castilleja and beat Notre Dame-San Jose on Monday, 194-232, in a West Bay Athletic League match at Menlo Country Club. Rachael Henry’s 45 won medalist honors and paced the Gators.

At Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course on Monday, Menlo (5-2) remained tied for second with SHP following a 189-204 victory over visiting Harker. Senior Kristen Lee led the Knights by earning medalist honors with a 4-over 40. Menlo will take on first-place Castilleja on Thursday at Palo Alto Muni.
