Payton Bell scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the middle of the fourth quarter to lift the Menlo College football team to a 14-10 victory over host Whitworth on Saturday in a Northwest Conference contest in Spokane.
Nolon Doss intercepted a fourth-down pass in Menlo territory to halt a late Whitworth drive. He returned the interception 40 yards but Whitworth stopped the Oaks on downs at the one-foot line with 1:27 remaining to play but the Pirates were unable to move the ball.
Oaks’ quarterback Cruz Castillo completed all four of his passes on the winning drive for 78 yards to lead the comeback. Lance Walkup’s 28-yard reception put the ball at Whitworth’s one-yard line, setting up Bell.
Menlo (2-1, 3-4) beat the Pirates for just the second time in 10 meetings and the first since 1999.
Whitworth took a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. Menlo broke the ice when Castillo found Erik Rasmussen for 16 yards and a touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Bell rushed for 76 yards on 19 carries while Castillo threw for 151 yards, completing half of his 20 passes, and rushed for another 18 yards.
