Menlo College grad Reggie Christiansen will succeed long-time Sacramento State baseball coach John Smith, who announced his retirement following the 2010 season after 32 years.
Christiansen is in his second season with the Hornets, and his first as associate head coach. He has been at South Dakota State the previous four years, overseeing the school’s transition to Division I from Division II. The Jackrabbits were 34-19 in his final year.
Christiansen was an assistant coach at Menlo College between 1997-99 and served as head coach in 2002.
“I’d like to thank my wife for her continued support, as she has endured living in five different cities in the past eight years while I moved through the coaching ranks,” said the 34-year-old Christiansen. “I am certainly looking forward to the chance to work with a group of young men that are eager to succeed. I’m excited about the opportunity to help this program grow.”
Women’s wrestling
Menlo College wrestler Katherine Fulp-Allen, the defending national champion and WCWA Wrestler of the Year, opens the season as the top-ranked wrestler in her weight division.
Fulp-Allen (51 kg) is one of four Oaks in the WCWA preseason individual rankings. Junior Brittany Caoile is ranked third at 95 kg, sophomore Rebecca Medeiros is eighth at 72 kg, and sophomore transfer Aubree Sutherland is eighth at 82 kg, though she is currently out with injury.
“I feel that we have wrestlers who are capable of moving up in the rankings,” Menlo coach Lee Allen said. “We have talented wrestlers who can place in upcoming tournaments.”
Fulp-Allen and Jacquelyn Davis competes in the Hargobind International tournament in Surrey, British Columbia on Saturday, Nov. 7. Menlo competes at the Mike Clock Open in Forest Grove, OR the next day.
Football
Running back Payton Bell and linebacker Shawn Winters were named Honorable Mention Northwest Conference Athletes of the Week for their efforts in Menlo College’s 14-10 comeback victory at Whitworth last Saturday.
The juniors received mention for the offensive and defensive awards, respectively, as the Oaks moved above .500 in NWC play for the first time ever.
Menlo (2-1, 3-4) hosts Lewis & Clark in a noon game Saturday looking to reach .500 for the season.
