Caltrain will be adding express service to its regular schedule of trains traveling between San Francisco and San Jose on weekends, Caltrain announced last week.
Beginning Jan. 1, Caltrain will introduce its “Baby Bullet” service on weekends: four trains that will make seven stops between San Jose and San Francisco. The stops will be at Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Hillsdale, San Mateo and Millbrae.
The new Baby Bullet train will make two roundtrips between San Francisco and San Jose, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, according to Caltrain.
Regular weekend trains, which will continue, make more than 20 stops on north and southbound routes, Caltrain said.
Caltrain officials said the new service, which will initially run as a pilot project for three months, is a response to public requests for faster weekend trips from the Peninsula to San Francisco.
Caltrain said it is trying new ways to boost ridership and revenue in the face of a projected $2.3 million budget gap for its 2011 fiscal year.
